The year 2004 saw a lot of devastation across the Philippines brought on by powerful storms and typhoons. Four of the most destructive typhoons (“Unding,” “Violeta,” “Winnie” and “Yoyong”) struck towards the end of the year and left damages in central and southern Luzon (north Philippines) amounting to more than PHP 5.7 billion (apprx. $120 million) while leaving thousands of casualties and fatalities in their wakes.
Confronted with such ruin and destruction, the ABS CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) joined hands with its parent company, the ABS CBN Broadcasting Corporation, and put together a week-long, nationwide telethon to aide the victims of these violent storms. The result was a resounding response from more than 10,000 donors giving gifts totaling PHP 1.59 billion (apprx. $ 35.4 million). The telethon helped more than 86,600 families with the distribution of relief goods and medical supplies and the rehabilitation of infrastructure.
With the success of this campaign, the Sagip Kapamilya program was born. Since then, Sagip Kapamilya has forged partnerships with key government and private institutions in the Philippines and around the world to provide immediate aide and assistance in emergency situations.
In North America, the Sagip Kapamilya program has helped solicit help for the victims of the 2004 typhoons, the 2006 Leyte mudslide, the 2006 Wowowee stampede, and the 2007 Southern California Wildfires, among others.
