(Linking Arms for the Pasig River)

The Pasig River is considered by many Filipinos to be the most iconic tidal estuary in the Philippines. Crossing through the heart of Metropolitan Manila, the Pasig River runs approximately 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) long and is said to have given birth to the modern Filipino. As the primary waterway access and catalyst of economic activity in its day, the Pasig helped establish Manila as the capital city and gave rise to the development of the Philippines.

In the past 50 years, however, the Pasig River had gradually declined because of pollution. The onset of construction, overpopulation in Metro Manila and increase of informal settlers on the river banks all contributed to the pollution and abandon which the Pasig had been unable to recover from since.

There had been several efforts by the Philippine government to clean the Pasig River – most recently in 1999 by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission established by Pres. Joseph Estrada – but these efforts had fallen short. Some of the difficulties faced by previous efforts included the lack of funding and technology to clean the river and the inability to properly assist and relocate the informal settlers living on the river banks.

Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig will look to hurdle these obstacles with the most comprehensive effort to clean the Pasig River. Under the guidance of the ABS CBN Foundation and its key programs – Bantay Kalikasan, Bantay Bata and Educational TV – the thrust will be a multi-aspect, multi-faceted approach to clean the river and keep it clean. Collaborating with key Philippine government agencies*, Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig has charted a seven-year campaign to tackle the pollution, help relocate informal settlers, provide livelihood opportunities and launch a major information movement. The hope is to revive a river and resuscitate a nation which had not seen the glory of the Pasig in over half a century.

Link arms with Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig and bring on the re-birth of the modern Filipino!
