The Kapit Bisig Bag:
Recycle, Re-use, Reduce and Revive

In a world which is going greener by the day, the task of Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig (Linking Arms for the Pasig River) to clean up the Pasig River is a major step in moving the Philippines towards a more eco-friendly state. The seven-year plan includes the actual cleanup of the river and the recycling of its pollutants into utilizable materials like tiles and building blocks. It will also address the other factors contributing to the river’s pollution, including the relocation of almost 5,000 families of informal settlers living off of the Pasig riverbanks. The relocation process for these families will involve not only the provision of modest housing but also the offering of educational and livelihood opportunities within the resettlement site in Calauan, Laguna. All of these efforts will help resuscitate the biologically-inactive Pasig, build a stable and productive new community in Calauan and revive a Filipino nation which rose from the Pasig’s cradle.

In North America, the project has been enthusiastically embraced and supported by Goldilocks Bakeshops and Foodshops through promotion of the Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig re-usable bags. The bags, which are made from 80% recycled plastic water bottles, is Kapit Bisig’s and Goldilocks’ participation in the global green movement by reducing the use of plastic or paper shopping bags. The sale and re-use* of these bags also serves as a fundraising activity to help subsidize the $14 million, seven-year project cost. Sharing in the vision of Kapit Bisig, Goldilocks hopes that we will all see a revived and active Pasig River in the near future.
