Kapit Bisig Para Sa ilog Pasig
The Cleaning Begins
Paco, MANILA – The cleaning of the Pasig River under the ABS CBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig [link to KBPIP program description] (Linking Arms for the Pasig River) project has begun with the relocation of informal settlers from the Paco, Manila area. As of August 11, 2009, a total of 221 families from the Estero de Paco, a 1.86 mile-long (3 km.) tributary of Pasig River, have been moved to the resettlement site in Calauan, Laguna, approximately 40 miles southeast of Metro Manila. The KBPIP project aims to relocate almost 5,000 families who are living informally in shanties along the banks of the Pasig River. Relocation is just one component of the comprehensive seven-year project which will revive the inactive river and rehabilitate the people and communities whose lives had revolved around it.
With the relocation and removal of shanties from the Estero de Paco, an estimated 307 tons of solid waste each year will never have to go through Pasig River. For its part, the Philippine government, through the Metro Manila Development Authority, has committed to building an easement along the cleared Apacible area near the Justo Lukban Elementary School (in photo). The cleanup effort in Paco was also managed with the assistance of the National Housing Authority, the City of Manila’s Department of Public Services and Urban Settlements Office, Armed Forces of the Philippines GHQ-J7/J3 (Camp Aguinaldo), Philippine Army CMOBn (Fort Bonifacio), Unilever, Nestlé, and officials of Brgys. 671, 673, and 683.
